The importance of money

Hello, today I will talk about the importance of money in my life.

I think for me, money is important, because it gives you many opportunities to do things I would like to do in the future, such as travel, study, and I do not really like to be in the future worried about getting money and that is my main objective, having money lets you focus your energy on getting other things that are important.

Since more than a year I live alone in Santiago, and I had to worry about my economy, and it's really stressful when you have little money and spend a lot on that, so I would love the situation  would calms down when I finish my studies and start working.

I still think that people make too many unnecessary expenses, I think we should ask what things really need.

I would love at some point in my life, have saved enough money  for not have to work more and can worry about other things, grow vegetables, and have a house in the country or something like that. I think it's terrible that in this society you have to worry mostly about making money, and that even people who have money always want more and more. Many times the concern of all to get more money put aside for more important things and transcendent to our lives.

I think money it's important, but only because the world works whith it, and we can't escape from that, if you want to do something, you will always need money.

To vote or not to vote

Hello everybody, today i'm going to talk about Sunday elections.

My position about Sunday election is that everybody should vote. I think the voluntary vote is not a very good idea, is more comfortable, but I believe that is your obligation as a citizen.

I don't like neither of the politicians and I understand people who don't want to vote this Sunday because they don't represent them, I think they don't represent me either, I think that the only that they want is power and they don't really care about people.

When you don't vote is like you don't care about, is like that you approve them and don't mind what they are doing. Also when you don´t go to vote you help the conservative parties, because they always vote for defend its interest.

If we don´t vote, the same people as always will be in power, in municipalities like Ñuñoa (where I live and vote) we have had the same mayor for more than twelve years, and we can see the same situation in Providencia, the political positions are not renewed.

Anyway, I think the big problem is that the people don't trust the politicians, we have seen all dirty things that the politicians do, and they are still in charge because there is nobody new in the political world.

However I believe that even if I had new people in political positions, would not help much because few of them resist the corruption that power brings.

Hobbies.

Today i'm going to talk about one of my hobbies. Since I was a little girl, I have always liked to read books. At first it was my mother who read me the stories, but then I started to read the same stories that my mother read to me.

I think one of the first book I read was Papelucho, and then of course, I read the whole collection. Then I started to read Harry Potter, The chronicles of Narnia, Oscar Wilde's Stories, Horacio Quiroga' stories, Greek mythology, and a lot more. I read all this books a lot of times.

Then when I grew up I started to read longer novels, I will mention the most important novels for me.
When I was 13 years old, I read The Catcher in the Rye of J.D. Salinger. I love this book, I have read it three times and still surprises me. It's about a 17 years old boy named Holden Caulfield, who spent three days alone in New York, and he talks about the falsity of the adult world, how they always are keeping the appearances. He is worried about leave the children's world and enter to the adult's world.

Another important book to me is 1984 of George Orwell, it's about a man who lives in some kind of dystopia, this book it's very pesimistic and give no hope for humanity, but I found it great.

I could talk about books a lot of time, but for now I will mention only this.

Comparison: School v/s University. My own experience.

My own experience at school is a special case, because I studied in a Waldorf School. A Waldorf School has a different teaching program, there are no marks, and it’s not recognized by the ministry of education. So, my comparison between school and University will be a bit more personal.

For me, studying at university has meant to get used to the habits of study and testing, because I never had a way of life as well. In the beginning was kind of difficult, but with the time, I get used to.

When I was at school, I had many time to do other things like read books, hang out with friends, paint, and a lot things more.  Now, I only do things for university and when I have a little time, I only want to rest.

Sometimes I think that I’m not learning at university, and I only study to pass the course, because I don’t have much time to understand what I’m doing. I am saturated with so many things, and I try to do all as fast we can.

Maybe this thing happens too at traditional schools. But in my school experience, this didn´t happened to me.

I like my career, but I will like to have some time to make other things I love, I have many interests and the University doesn’t let me do all of them. I think if I could do other things, I would be happier with what I’m doing now.

Oral presentation topic

My oral presentation will be about the distribution of green areas in Santiago.

I decided to talk about this, because green areas have a notorious concentration in the residential zones, where the most accommodated people live. Green areas are necessary for the people’s health and in Santiago there are insufficient. Considering the development in Chile in the last years, and the Santiago positioning as a city of business, we have the resources for invest in environmental policy for developing of green areas, but the distribution of new green areas should not be in places where there is already a high concentration of green areas, like upper class municipalities.

Municipalities with higher income levels, have sufficient green areas for them population, but poor municipalities, have no resources to increase them green areas. The world health organization, recommended green areas of 9 meters per capita, in Santiago the media is 4 meters per capita, considering that there are municipalities with a lot more, like Vitacura, who increase the media.

Santiago is a very contaminated city, who needs an urban planning for the development of a good environment.  I will try to get information about the native woods in Santiago which are being deforested for the expansion of the city.

In my presentation I will show the distribution of green areas in Santiago, and I will compare with other developed cities, to see how we should be in a years.

For my presentation I will use statistics, photographs, and comparison between different neighborhoods in Santiago.

Why I decided to study geography

I really don’t know why I decided to study geography.

I always like geography but I never knew about the career, I also like very much nature, animals, botany, earth sciences and social sciences, so I think that geography could be a good career for me.

About two years ago, I had no idea that I wanted to study; I saw many options like sociology, history, Engineering, English. But then I heard about geography and I thought that was a complete discipline. I didn’t know a geographer to guide me, and I didn’t know what a geographer does, so I investigate about geography for myself.

I like natural sciences and social sciences, and geography is a career that complement both, my tastes are so variable, so I think I never could study something specific.

I think geography is a profession who give you opportunities to help people, to know about the planet, to travel and a lot of more beautiful things. The cities and public policy have very bad organization, and the society needs geographers to fix that.

I am hopeful that geography will have a place on the cities’ organization, because in Chile are many problems with natural disasters like earthquakes and the cities, villages and rural zones are not always prepare for that, because of the location of buildings and houses, and geographers have much to say about that.

To study geography in Chile is fascinating, because is a land with a varied terrain, and different climates that make it very interesting.
